Almost immediately upon returning to Kampala, the earthquake in Haiti happened. I was sitting on the couch in the living room as Danny was going to work - "did you know there was an earthquake in Haiti?" He hadn't heard. Haiti was his last post with State Department - he was there for two-and-a-half years.
And a day later, he was gone. He took a one-month assignment to help out at the US Embassy in Haiti, so we went from circumnavigation of Lake Vic mode into crisis-earthquake-goodbye mode. I guess that's how these things happen.
